IWA: Over 20 Years of Community Service

Executive Director

Indus Welfare Association

Reflecting on over two decades of community development, education, and humanitarian work by Indus Welfare Association across rural Sindh.

When Indus Welfare Association (IWA) was established on January 15, 2001, it was born from a simple yet powerful vision: to see an upcoming gender-equal, socio-economically self-sustaining, politically aware community with sound health and literacy.

Over twenty years later, that vision has translated into tangible, measurable impact across rural Sindh. From a small community organization, IWA has grown into a trusted development partner working across education, health, WASH, disaster relief, and community empowerment.

Our journey has been marked by key milestones:

2001 - IWA registered under the Social Voluntary 1961 Act 2002 - Indus Educational Academy established, beginning with primary education 2005 - First partnership with Sindh Education Foundation for Community Supported Schools 2006 - WASH program launched with Japan Water Forum Fund support 2007 - Indus Computer Centre established with German Consulate support 2010 - Expanded to 20 Adult Women Education Literacy Centres through AASA/USAID 2022 - Major flood relief operations in partnership with IOM

Throughout these years, our guiding principle has remained unchanged: bottom-up planning that empowers communities at the grassroots level by involving them in decision-making. We don't impose solutions — we facilitate community-led development.

Our partnerships with organizations including Sindh Education Foundation, IOM, USAID, Japan Water Forum Fund, Church World Service, PPAF/World Bank, and the Consulate-General of Germany have enabled us to implement 13 major projects with combined funding of over Rs. 34 million.

But our greatest achievement isn't measured in rupees or project numbers. It's measured in the thousands of children who can now read, the women who can use computers, the families who have access to clean water, and the communities that are more resilient, more informed, and more empowered than ever before.

As we look to the future, our commitment remains steadfast: to continue working towards a rural Sindh where every child has access to quality education, every family has clean water, and every community has the tools to build a sustainable future.
